Processing Speed
What is measured for this index?
- indicates how quickly a student can take in information and make connections to other information
- these tasks require executive control of attention and sustained effort for a period of time while working with material as quickly as possible
What does this mean for learning?
- Ability to focus attention and quickly scan, discriminate between, and sequentially order visual information
- Requires persistence and planning ability, but is sensitive to motivation, difficulty working under a time pressure, and motor coordination too.
- Ability to take in information and operate with it quickly and efficiently (e.x. copying from board, answering questions, formulating their response)
- Related to reading performance and development too
- Related to Working Memory in that increased processing speed can decrease the amount of information a child must "hold" in working memory
- Lower processing speed can impair the effectiveness of working memory by requiring the child to "hold" in working memory more information than the child can effectively process at a given time
